Madam White Snake

This is a personal experience and as I laying in agony, my mind would alleviate some of it away by thinking of new ways to express my life.  This is the first time that a commentary is way longer than the poem itself!

1 春別夏至已半年 Spring had left, summer’s here and half the year gone,
2 臥病難起真可憐 So pitiful to be bedridden.
3 誰會為我盜靈芝 Who would, for me, steal the herb of immortality for me?
4 只恐夢中待長眠 Alas, I’m afraid that in dreams to wait for that eternal slumber.

3 靈芝 short for 靈芝草 and not the mushroom of the mortal realms, Ganoderma fungus. The magical mushroom grows only in the Southern Constellation governed by the Old Man of the Southern Pole, 南極仙翁. This allusion comes from the story of “Madam White Snake”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_White_Snake

However, my version came from the book, “The Beginning and Aftermath of the White Snake”. Here the antagonist was a toad. In the Kunlun Mountains, a white snake and a toad were neighbors. The feud started one night when the toad was playing with his internal of spiritual powers in a form of a bright ball. The white snake was curious about the light and snucked up to see what it was. Immediately she knew what it was and swallowed it. An extra 500 years of spiritual training was gained and the toad was left dying. After many years, a chance meeting with the Queen Mother of the West she became a menial attendant in her immortal peach garden as she had never done evil per say. She longed to become an immortal and she asked the Queen Mother the reason to cast away her original form of a snake. She was told that a thousand years ago, a boy had saved her from a group of boys that were playing with her to death. She must repay that debt to this person first.

She was advised to go to Hangchow on the Dragon Boat Festival to meet him. The tallest person will be her reborn benefactor. On her journey, she befriended a green snake and became her younger sister while a black fish Demon King of the Dong Ting Lake, her elder brother.

From the throngs of masses of people, the white snake cleverly deduced the tallest person would be the young man standing on top a small hill. With the help of the green snake a plan was hatched a sudden downpour created with a small boat at the opportune time to cross the lake. Being chivalrous, the benefactor lent her his umbrella so that he could have the pretext of coming for his umbrella the next day. She coyly proposed to him and after the marriage as witnessed by his older brother and sister-in-law, they opened an apothecary shop and with her magical powers she helped the husband to heal the sick while getting prosperous from her predictions on when to buy low, sell high for herbs.

Meanwhile, the toad had recovered from his mishap and converted to Buddhism. And during a chance meeting, he saw an evil aura surrounding the husband and with his magical powers, found out the aura belonged to his former enemy. He swore vengeance by breaking up their marriage. He told the husband that if he doesn’t believe him, he could ask her drink some realgar wine on the next Dragon Boat Festival. After many enticements from the husband, she took a sip and immediately felt oozy. She told him she needed rest and forbade him from coming into the room. Immediately once, on the bed, she reverted to her true form of a giant white snake with a single horn protruding from the head. The husband was worried at the sudden turn of things and went into the bedroom and parted the bed curtains… The sight was too much for his heart and fell down dead. As the midday heat abated, the green snake was able to return and found out what had happen. She immediately awakened the white snake sister. She wept bitterly to see that instead of repaying her gratitude, she had killed her benefactor. She resolved to fly to the Southern Constellation to retrieve the magical fungus that has the power to retrieve the dead back. She found the herb and was about to leave when the guardian spirits of the deer and crane stopped her from escaping. No matter how she pleaded and for whatever reason, they would not listen. A great battle ensued. She was able to defeat the deer guardian but could not do so with the crane guardian because it is her natural nemesis and that herb once plucked cannot leave her hand otherwise it would disappear. She fell and was about to be killed when the Old Man of the Southern Pole appeared and told his disciple to stop. He allowed her to fulfill her mission.

Upon reviving her husband, the suspicious man did not believe the wife’s words that a snake had crept into the bed. They even showed him the dead snake now hanging outside a tree’s branch. He became fearful and ran to the Golden Hill Temple where the toad spirit is the abbot. The green snake told her that her husband is a faithless man and they should leave him for good. However, the white snake could not part with him. The toad abbot used the reason for public good for his personal vendetta and would not listen. Another battle began. No matter how great the power she has, she could not overcome Buddha’s holy golden alms bowl. As the bowl came descending upon like as a prison, a sudden purple shot forth from her stomach and stopped the bowl from further descent. In this instant, the snakes were able to escape. The toad was also surprised and divined that this power came from the God of Literature as her future son.

The snakes sought help from her older brother, the black fish demon king. Together with their armies of water creatures, they came surging from the river to the hilltop temple. In this way, thousands of innocents lost their lives and greatly alarmed Heaven. The Jade Emperor order a contingent of heavenly troops under the command of the Eastern Ocean Dragon King to subdue the havoc the demons were creating. In the heat of the battle, the white snake labored and had to withdraw. Defeated, she had to give birth to the God of Literature at the Broken Bridge. Meanwhile, the Goddess of Mercy appeared to the husband and explained the cause and effect of their past fates and showed him a way to see his wife. Thus, they were reunited and became loving as before.

A month after the child was born, a great festivity took place to celebrate the child’s month long existence. The toad monk came knocking. He was refused entry but he just hurled his Buddha’s golden alms bowl and flew into the bedroom and the white snake was imprisoned within. The horrified husband reached into the bowl to retrieve his wife’s form of a snake but he could not reach it. For within the bowl is the universe and no mere mortal hand could reach for the stars.

Thus, the white snake was imprisoned under the Thunder Wind Pagoda till iron trees bloom. Seven years later, the green snake had practised enough to create seven willow green magic knives to save her sister. A battle ensued with the toad. She was easily defeated but not before she had burnt the pagoda. At the moment of her demise, the Goddess of Mercy came to rescue her by asking the toad abbot to release the green snake to her for the time being. She would live in her jade vase until time comes for reunion.

Twenty years later, the son grew up and took the imperial examinations and became the number one scholar. The Emperor was pleased with the looks and demeanor of the successful candidate. He was granted a boon. The request was instead of the custom in heading back to his hometown immediately, he would like to take a detour to Hangchow first. The Emperor was amazed at such a paltry request and asked for the reason. The Emperor was so amazed at the story that he issued an edict of pardon to the mother. At the pagoda, the edict was announced and a great roar ensued as the ground opened up. The toad abbot appeared and sighed. It must be destiny because she would only be freed when iron trees bloom. For one of the accoutrements of the Number One Scholar was a golden staff with golden flowers decorations. The Goddess of Mercy appeared and released the green snake so that the family can be reunited.

It was filial piety and more importantly, the edict of the Son of Heaven trumps all.

Note: The picture of the heartless husband is not shown in the book's profile of characters. Even minor roles were pictured!

Deep Thoughts In the Bamboo Grove - 竹林靜思

This came about on seeing the title of this English title of a Chinese song playing on my computer music player, “Deep Thoughts In the Bamboo Grove”, which I took to mean in Chinese as “竹林靜思”

風別竹葉翠,
The wind had left the green bamboo leaves,
靜思無杯醉. Deep in thoughts, nary a cup of wine needed.
魂夢世外間, My soul dreams of realms beyond this mortal world,
逍遥何憂慮. Carefree and nary a worry be.

Love At First Sight Prisoners - 鍾情囚

This theme was inspired from a Cantonese opera movie, 玉郎三戲女將軍, starring 陳寶珠 and 蕭芳芳.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeVlP4JlQIQ

The hero was reciting a poem but since there was no subtitle, this is what I thought he was saying,

可憐一點靈犀未透
鍾情玉素? 無由?
從此有恨鎖心頭
淒涼最是黄昏後

Obviously, even if I had guessed the characters correctly, the form of a classic Tang poem is not correct and so I had to come up with one using the same rhyme and theme. I debated whether the love should be mutual or just one sided. In the end, I opted for a two way longing…

1 一點靈犀已相透 Of what little understanding, our mutual feelings are tacitly understood,
2 可憐鍾情無自由 Alas, with love at first sight, our freedoms are no more.
3 牆隔萬里蓬山近 A thousand miles the wall separates us and yet paradise is so near.
4 淒涼最是黄昏後
The evening has faded, that’s when our heart stricken grief is hardest to bear.

1 It was believed that the rhinoceros horn is sensitive due to its white patterns in the horn. The usual meaning of 靈 being sacred or spiritual. Here it means “sensitive” as in 靈敏 or 靈感. From Li Shang Yin’s famous couplet, 身無彩鳳雙飛翼, 心有靈犀一點通, it now carries the meaning of having tacit feelings or understanding.

3 蓬山, the mountain in 蓬萊, the main islet of the immortals in the Eastern Ocean. This line alludes to the reply from Emperor Sung Ren Tsung to 宋祁’s lyrical poem which was the rage of the time.

An investigation took place as female officials of the inner court do not cavort with those from the outer court. The female official confessed that she knew of the poet during an imperial banquet bestowed by the emperor for the poet. Afterwards, while one day on an official duty, she was in a carriage and perchance saw of the poet on the street and called out his name. The poet turned, saw the caller and e was smitten by her beauty. He wrote the poem to lament the impossibility of such a union. Upon hearing the story, the emperor simply smiled and replied, “the Blessed is not that far away.” So, he bestowed upon him the lady official as his wife.

4 Everything had become dark. No streetlight back then!

畫轂雕鞍狹路逢, Narrow is the road for the painted wheel hubs and carved saddles,
一聲腸斷繡簾中. A sudden a cry of heartbrokenness came from within the curtains.
身無彩鳳雙飛翼, No wings of a colored phoenix to fly to your side,
心有靈犀一點通. But we tacit feelings we have for each other.

金作屋,
A house built from gold,
玉為籠, Gilded bird cages from jade.

車如流水馬如龍,
Carriage traffic is like rushing water and horses like coiling dragons,
劉郎已恨蓬山遠, Lover Liu regrets that the paradise is so far away,
更隔蓬山一萬重. And yet where you are, a myriad times further.

Liu Lang is a young woodcutter who mistakenly stumbled into a fairyland in the forest. He met a beautiful girl and married her. For a year, they lived in great joy and harmony when the yearning for his family started. His wife pleaded him not to leave and managed him to stayed for another three months before his itching returned. This time, the wife tearfully acquiesced to her husband’s wishes. He found out that too many had gone by since he had left. With no one he knew was alive, he tried to go back to the fairy grotto but could not find his way back.

Regrets Without End

The original idea came from lines 5 and 6 but in a different form.  I was stumped in completing the lines until the idea from lines 1 and 2 came into being and everything falls in place.

1 前水不回後潮湧 Never to return as waves from behind pushes the head waters forth,
2 春風力倦秋氣重 Languid is the spring wind and the feel of autumn is heavy.
3 一代豪傑今日塵 A generation of heroes are but dust of today,
4 雲烟散盡萬事空 And when all the mists have been dissipated, vacuity is left.

5 西域明月東海霧 The bright moon of the West and the fog of the Eastern Ocean…
6 蓬萊難踏極樂夢 Difficult it is to step into the Immortal Isles and Nirvana is but a dream.
7 勸世莫負時光好 Forsake not the goodness of youth, I urge of thee,
8 淚滴成河歎無窮 ‘tis too late when tears had become rivers of endless sighs.

1 It is the nature of water to seek the lowest level and can never go back whence they came just as time is of only one direction.

2 The weight of the years.

4 Power, material wealth and even relationships are like the mists covering up their true nature. They are just temporal accoutrements of life that never last.

5 西域 – Han Dynasty term for the western regions beyond the Jade Gate Pass, 玉門關. Here it refers to India where Buddhism came from.  The bright moon signifies the ultimate truth.  The Eastern Ocean is where the Taoist Immortal Isles are located.  Nearby lies the underwater palace of chief of the Dragon Kings.  The fog represents the mystic and hazy promises of an immortal’s life.

6 蓬萊 (Horai in Japanese) is the name of one of the three Immortal Isles.  極樂 is short for 極樂世 (The Realm of Ultimate Joy), the Buddhist paradise.

7 Religion is man’s insecurity after death.  What is real are regrets when one's youth had been squandered away in pursuit of foolishness.

Never Lasting Dreams - 烟雨夢

Today was a beautiful sunny day and the breezes were gentle. While sitting on the picnic table by the cliffs on the old grounds of Marineland basking like a snake in the sun, I was able to reorganize and refining a poem that had me stumped for a long time. What a great way to to distract me from my recovering legs.  I was not able to enjoy the scenery without my large hat to shield me from the sun  and the tabletop was hard on my butt. Thus, unable to steep in the splendor of the ocean that is before my eyes.

1 巫山烟雨夢 The misty ethereal dreams of Mt. Wu,
2 長短總是空 Be long or be short, emptiness still in the end.
3 後庭寂寞聲 Now awakened to the sound of a desolate courtyard,
4 花無百日紅 Nary could flowers remain in red for a hundred days.

1 An allusion to the story of the Duke having a tryst with the Goddess of the Mountain. “妾在巫山之陽,高丘之阻,旦為朝雲,暮為行雨”

2 Always an end to everything.

4 From the saying, 花無百日紅, 人無千日好 – Flowers cannot last for a hundred days and man cannot be food for a thousand days.

A Whimsical Tale

This was the inspired result from listening to 英雄勝戰大渡河, same poetic theme but in environment not of the moon and flowers.  In my mind, a youth is practising his swordsmanship during a snowstorm on Mt. Heaven's Sky. A lovestruck watcher was in the shadows, not only admiring his prowess but also by his manly beauty.

The line that began all - 天山飛雪劍影寒

As I delved deeper, I told myself why being so covert in the shadows. Why not be right in the forefront and still able to harbor secret thoughts? As usual, things began to take on their own as if being guided by the hand of a Muse.

1 雪花銀
光寒 The cold light of a blurry sword gleaming silvery in the falling snow,
2 無情千回無限嘆 Unending sighs of a thousand rounds of viciousness,
3 師兄神威何能勝 How can I be victorious against my elder brother’s heavenly prowess?
4 眼前
架心偷漢 One eye parrying his strikes yet my heart yearns for his love.

1 寒 – cold, lacking in affection.

2 無情 – heartless, no feeling for, uncaring, ruthlessness.

3 An elder brother is a Chinese concept of a student taken in earlier by a teacher and therefore of a higher pecking order. All other factors such as age, talent or background is of no consequence in this ranking system.

4 偷漢 (to steal a man) -  said of a woman taking a lover. Of course, in this day and age, it can be otherwise.

Each line has a double meaning –his swordsmanship or something else? One can easily infer that the narrator’s swordsmanship is far. Due to the stated reason, victory could not be easily achieved. These two are either in a sparring practice or locked in mortal combat. It’s up to the reader to use his imagination.

Why Think Of The Past? 何憶當初?

"To write well is to write something you know".  This line from the movie, "I Remember Mama" resonates too well with me. I was waiting impatiently for the doctor to have look at me and rather than just staring at the blank white walls, I took this downtime to put into good use.  I jotted down my draft on a piece of paper towel, least I may forget.

There was too many 不 and I wasn't pleased. After monkeying around, they were eliminated.

The second line, 莫似花魂來春愁 translates into “unlike the souls of flowers and next spring saddened” makes no sense at all. If a pause is effected after the 4th character, the rest of the line indicates someone was lamenting that flowers do come back beautifully as ever in the next spring.  However, life is not like this. I find this line too obscure to figure it out.  Changes are needed.

Also, the flow from one line to another is not natural enough for me. Then during the dead of the night, I got up and was unable to go back to sleep. So, in my mind’s eye, I began to change things around until I was satisfied. Slumber then drifted sweetly into my eyes.

Translating directly gives no sense of the intended feeling felt in the Chinse version.

1 江水東去不回頭
The east flowing waters - never to return,
2 今年
花明春茂This year's withering blossoms - next spring's luxuriance.
3 隆冬一朝醉夢醒 Then one frosty morning, my days of wine and roses are over.
4 何憶當初令人愁 Why remember what was once to make oneself fret.

1 Chinese rivers flow from west to east due to the Himalayas. In Chinese poetry, the flowing waters means the ever flowing passage of time.

2 They are not be the same flowers but they look the same.

3 Literally, “One harsh winter's morning, an inebriated dream was woken”. The harsh winter here represents some kind of ordeal.

4. Really more of a rhetorical question.
