Strangers that We are Now

Waking up from a dream at 12:23am, during my semi-consciousness, I found myself reciting two poetic lines that were in my dream. At this transitioning moment in regaining full consciousness, I was momentarily distracted.  The first line became a total blackout and was forever lost in slumberland. What remained was the second line and became the first line of this resulting poem.

Without this background of information, the poem can be interpreted differently.
Got up and wrote it down before going back to sleep, lest I would forget everything the next day upon reawakening.  Sure enough, when I woke up again, the last two lines were hazy in my mind.

Upon wakening, my dream had ended;  my soul and haziness dissipated,
Half my body had returned and my mind befuddled.
Still straddled in both worlds, a momentarily forgetfulness beget,
Even if we were to see each other again, strangers we're on a road newly travelled.

Dreams of Old Chin Huai

These poems took a relative short time to complete. The first two were finalized on 17 Jan 2019.  The first poem was inspired along the lines of 歌醉銀河曲遍林from the previous poem,

http://jeffinous.blogspot.com/2019/01/first-poem-of-2019.html

Unbounded joy as the boat is being moored to the banks of Chinhuai
Bright are the flaming pearls and flowers galore turning the night red
Songs inebriate the Milky Way and wine befuddles the soul.
One crowing of the golden cockerel shatters dreams of men.

Chinhuai (Qinhuai) was an adult Disneyland for ancient Chinese males.  Flaming pearls refer to the red lanterns burning bright throughout the night and flowers are the painted faces of courtesans in rogue. 神 can either mean the "spirit/soul" or the "gods"

Things that can Change and Those that Cannot..

Once more, tonight's moon of the Chin times rose from last night,
Difficult it is for the east flowing waters returning to the same spot.
The Milky Way has yet to change but the mortal world already had.
Still in the realm of immortals, loneliness remain.

This one was inspired by the single character 秦 from the previous poem as I doodled on writing this character properly.  This in turn made me think of Wang Chang Lin's

The next one came about because of one character change in the first line.  The rhyming scheme had to be changed because it happened at the last line.  Technically, it does not matter since the first line don't have to be rhymed.  However, I would like to push myself further and see what I can come up with. At the same time, to have some variation.

Once more, tonight's moon of the Chin times rose from last night,
Gone is the east flowing river but the morning tide brought it back.
How can the Milky Way change when the Love remained the same?
Like the flying swallow guarding eternally the loneliness at the Tomb of Prolongation.

The love in the Milky Way alludes to the legend of the Cowherd and the Divine Spinning Maid where they can only meet once a year.

In the Chinese mindset, Chao Fei Yen (Chao Flying Swallow) is better known for her beauty than her palace intrigues that took place in the Han Court of Emperor Cheng. When he died, her fortunes was like a burst of fireworks. From empress, she became a dowager empress as honored by the succeeding emperor. However, when he died, she was demoted back to empress and later sentenced to guard the tomb of her deceased husband. On that very day, she committed suicide than to face the loneliness of the place. Hence the last line is a sarcasm.

Continuing with the idea of 秦月漢時, and some doodling, here's one of a totally different nature.

Upon wakening, my dream had ended;  my soul and haziness dissipated,
Half my body had returned and my mind befuddled.
Still straddled in both worlds, a momentarily forgetfulness beget,
Even if we were to see each other again, strangers we're on a road newly travelled.

A Playful Jade for Me?

This poem is one of the most time consuming from its inception to its final form of now. It started as I doodled with the first line on the fourth day of this year, Two days later,

The moon is dark and stars a few as the river flows forebodingly,
The wind is cold, the ripples are the midnight song.
The feelings of the Lunar Palace are not of those of Playful Jade,
Only the flute can set my  midnight heart free.

Playful Jade was the daughter of the Duke of the Chin State (The First Emperor's ancestors).  Being the favorite child, when she saw a tributary jade and never stopped playing with it.  Hence her name.  She was skilled in the playing the panpipes to which her father built the Phoenix Tower for her. The traditional Chinese panpipe has two long pipes represent the wings of the phoenix.  However, one is just for symmetric beauty and is not used.  When she became of age, she declared she would marry no one but the one who could  understand her music.  Her doting father acquiesced to her demand.

One night on her tower, she heard flute music wafting into hers. A duet began. Immediately she knew who was to be her husband.  The next day, the Duke sent the prime minister to inquire the whereabouts of the source of the music.  A local told the minister that a young man had taken up residence on top of a nearby mountain recently and flute music was heard ever since.  Eventually, the young couple were married and led a happy life.  In the intervening years, their musical skills became so accompolished that during a full moon, as they played, a dragon and phoenix descended from the heavens.  She mounted on the phoenix while the husband on the dragon and both flew away to become immortals.

means "to release", "to solve", "to loosen" and by extension, "to understand".  The last line can therefore also be translated as "Only the flute can understand my midnight heart".  But given the context, "releasing" is a better translation.

As I was still not quite satisfied with the second line, eventually it morphed into,

A flute song upon a boat and the winds are sighing cold.

I did not like as it is homophonous with (lasciviousness) and so back to the drawing board I went. Finally, to save time, I asked a friend for suggestions as I was getting nowhere.  His advice was changing my "dark moon" into a "bright moon" for its glow will fade out the stars. It made sense.  At the same time I was asked why the usage of .  The more obscure meaning is water moving slowly.  As such not good word choice on my part.  His other suggested changes were,

The moon is bright, the stars are scattered and the river moves slowly
The passion is thick but the feelings are cold, not those of Playful Jade
Only the melody lifts the forlornness of these midnight sounds.

I like his changes, especially the last two lines but did not agree with the first.  I felt that if the moon was bright, one can see clearly the speed of the river and therefore not as foreboding.  After some  monkeying around,

The moon is cold and the scattered stars descend slowly into the west,
Sad songs moored by the river and the mountains by the forest.
Feelings of the Lunar Palace are not of those of Playful Jade,
The abandoned flute can only set free the midnight sounds.

All my concerns about the state of the brightness of the moon is now eliminated. This time my friend changed the second line to,

The melancholy song winds with the river by the forest

Again I like it very much but pride got in way for to me to use it. Also I don't want others to think that this is mine. I just have to come up with something better.  With this impetus, a total of nine days since the poem's inception, this version is something I can live with for the time being.

The moon is cold and scattered stars are setting slowly into the west,
Inebriating the Milky Way with my song and my meolody overfloweth the forest,
But construe not the feelings of the Great Cold Palace as those of Playful Jade's,
Close to my flute to set my midnight feelings free.

After reading out aloud for a few times, the tones of second line doesn't seem quite right to me.  After more brain racking, I still had no luck when I decided to try rearranging the lines instead.  In the end, after many permutations and some changes, this one is finalized for time being.  Only the future knows.

The moon is cold with the midnight music and scattered stars,
And inebriating the Milking Way as it descends to the west.
Construe not the feelings of the Great Cold Palace as those of Playful Jade's,
The traverse flute plunges the player's saddened heart into greater depths.

Happy New Year

It was 3am in the morning and a friend came as he had gotten off the airport and came to get his car keys in my house. As I was closing the door behind him, I felt the too coldness of the night air and when I went back to my bed, this line, kept popping into my mind,

After many revisions, in my head, I was able to drift off to slumberland when I was quite satisfied with the theme. However, the next morning, there were many more refinements...

The night's too cold and stars are also in hiding,
And no traveller is stupid enough to venture out.
Awakened from my drunken stupor, I find the morning lonely,
And so once more I belched out songs from last year.

Meteoric Dreams

This came about when I finished updating 兩岸凡間淚,  and the theme of the Seventh Night was still fresh in my mind...

http://jeffinous.blogspot.com/2018/12/update-of.html

The second stanza was harder because I didn't know how to connect the two stanzas smoothly into a coherent and related theme until the three words, 流星夢 waltzed into my mind the next day and everything fell into place easily.

31 December, 2018

Two separated Milky Way Stars,
And one night upon the magpie bridge.
Teary eyes and words' end not yet reached,
The east bank glows once more in white.

In the River of Time, short-lived meteor showers are like dreams,
And Youth are but guests of the mortal world.
How can eternal regrets of Heaven be compared?
Of bitter fruit on every Seventh Night plucked.
